April Birchbox Review

A while ago I stopped my Birchbox subscription, but having skipped the last couple of Love Me Beauty boxes I decided to rejoin Birchbox as I was missing my beauty box fix.  I used a code to get a free box so it made it good value.

My box arrived today and although we’re in May it was the April box (May’s box will start shipping next week). The theme of the April box is Good Enough To Eat but in all honesty I think the link with a few of the items is tenuous or non-existent.

It’s always a risk subbing to a box late on, and having seen reviews, that you’ll get so-called “box envy” and unfortunately I did. My box contained lovely items but knowing that some people got a full size shampoo (worth £5.50), and higher end items like One Love balm, RMK primer (worth £15) and a Laura Mercier body butter when I didn’t is a bit annoying.

Propercorn mini bag This is the “lifestyle extra” everyone got. I got Vanilla and Coconut.  A full size of this is 90p.

Color Club Nail Lacquer Everyone got a mini nail polish this month, but colours differed. Mine was a mint green which a nice summery colour.

The Balm Eye and Cheek palette (pie) Again everyone got this and it fitted the theme well. It’s also a nice product that will be used and a handy size.

Yes To Cucumber Wipes 10 pack This is where it gets a bit annoying.  If you are giving some people a full sized product (like the Tommyguns shampoo) worth £5.50, why not give a full size pack of wipes (RRP £4.99) to the other subscribers rather than a 10 pack worth £1.66? This would go some way to balancing a box’s value. That aside I love Yes To… products so the wipes are very welcome.

Lord and Berry Mini Eye Pencil This is an ok product if not a bit dull. I don’t mind the size though as it’s good to have a smaller eye pencil to keep in my bag for touch-ups. But who hasn’t got, or used, an eye pencil before? Again, if you got this instead of the One Love Balm or RMK Primer then it’s really not a great alternative value wise as this is probably worth £2.50

Campos De Ibiza body milk 38ml I’m guessing most people either got this or the Laura Mercier Body Butter. A full size of this retails at  £16.55 making the sample worth about £3. But if you got the Laura Mercier sample (full size £27) then once again you’re getting better value. It does smell lovely though and has a nice light texture that is perfect for summer, so I may consider purchasing the full size.

So you kind of get my drift. The box values really are imbalanced this month and, whilst they may be nice enough products, if you have a box worth half or a third of what someone else’s is yet you both pay the same it really is quite unfair.  I understand the “we have limited quantities of each product” argument but then why do some boxes get all of the higher value items and other boxes none?

Luckily this is in effect my “free” box so I’ll see what May brings but if the boxes are again unbalanced in value I’ll cancel my rolling subscription and stick with Love Me Beauty who seem to balance the value of their “Menus” better.
