This month I decided not to stay up till midnight to order my You Beauty Box. The last few months of staying up till 1am whilst I battled through a website that kept crashing, combined with a menu that was great, but not amazing, made me decide that for once I would risk possible sell-outs for the sake of beauty sleep. And so I got up at around 7.30am, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, to place my order; no website issues and surprisingly no sell-outs!
To be honest I was still undecided what I was going to choose. The line-up was great, but for me there were no real stand-outs. In the end I plumped for one item that isn’t something I’d usually buy and one item that is fairly practical.
Firstly I chose a Wild About Beauty Lipstick. I’ve heard a lot about this brand, founded by make-up artist Kim Jacob and TV personality Louise Redknapp, and their eyeshadow featured in the August Birchbox. Sadly I didn’t get the eyeshadow in my box, but the brand was still firmly on my radar, so when I saw it was a choice in this months You Beauty selection it was definitely on my shortlist.
Lipstick is not an item I wear often, being more a lipgloss sort of girl, but I do sometimes like to pick items I wouldn’t ordinarily buy – I think that part of the fun is being pushed out of your comfort zone and experimenting. Besides, this lipstick sounds gorgeous; infused with beneficial ingredients including Wild Mango Butter and Argan Oil plus SPF15. It is also described as being lightweight and leaves your lips with a wash of sheer colour and soft shine finish, so should be perfect. The colour I received is Bobbie – a fairly light nude shade with a slight gold shimmer running through it, although in my picture it looks darker.
This lipstick normally retails at £15 and alone more than covers the price of the box. Amazing!
My second choice was a practical one; ARK Age Aware Skincare
Body Butter & Shower Gel (30ml each). Travel sized products are always useful but are also a great way to try new brands. How many of us stick with the same familar brands we pick off the shelves of our local Boots when there are a myriad of exciting niche brands waiting to be discovered?
ARK’s deeply nourishing Body Butter & Shower Gel contain a blend of essential oils, specifically chosen to boost your wellbeing, and come in a choice of fragrance (Living, Loving or Lounging). I got Loving and as soon as I opened the box a lovely scent from the essential oils including Ylang Ylang, Neroli, Patchouli, Camomile, and Myrhh wafted out. The fragrance is so indulgent I’m going to save this duo for a pamper night rather than confine them to my travel bag.
This month’s box was celebrating You Beauty’s first Birthday so each box generously contained 4 extras – Two Crabtree & Evelyn teabags, a makeup sponge, a Hello Fresh £25 gift card, and a full size Toni & Guy Volume Plumping Whip.
As usual a handy mini magazine inside the box explains all the products featured that month, as well as including a selection of brand offers, exclusive to You Beauty Discovery subscribers.
The other products available in this months shortlist are:
Eyeko 2 Hydrogel Eye Patch Sachets; Germaine de Capuccini Excel Therapy Continuous Defence Cream & Multi Regenerating Rose Hip Oil Duo (5ml & 3ml); John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Colour Protecting Moisturising Shampoo & Conditioner Duo (50ml each); Mavala Mavadry Manicure Time-Save Fast Drying Nail Polish Finish (5ml); Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation (7.5ml); Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen (0.8g); Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm (1.8g); and Sanctuary Spa White Lily & Damask Rose Body Lotion (75ml).
Due to its excellent value, the way you can customise the contents and the quick turnaround (none of this waiting around for dispatch day mid-month) You Beauty Discovery is probably my favourite beauty box. Priced at just £6.95 including postage it offers a fantastic opportunity to try new beauty products and treat yourself without breaking the bank.
