Lip Treatments – My Top Picks

The days may be getting longer but we are still firmly in the grips of Winter, with cold frosty mornings and even the odd flurry of snow to remind us that Spring has not yet sprung. With that in mind we still need to protect ourselves from the drying effects of cold, wintery winds.

One of the areas of our bodies which can particularly suffer this time of year is our lips so I really like to up the ante when it comes to hydration and protection and here are four of my favourite treatments.

Best for Winter sun – Kiehls Lip Balm SPF 15 (£12.50, available at Kiehls counters or online).

This blend of vitamins and oils act as a protectant for the delicate skin of the lips and lip area and provides additional relief to dry, parched lips. The addition of SPF 15 makes this ideal for taking with you on skiing and snowboarding holidays, where despite the cold your skin is still exposed to strong sun. SPF seems to be a property many lip balms lack so I always like to ensure at least one of my balms contains sun protection.

Best for longlasting moisture – LipGlam 100% Natural Lip Balm (£9.99, available from LipGlam).

LipGlam’s magic ingredient is 100% pure lanolin, a natural emollient extracted from sheep’s wool, which is hypoallergenic and suitable for even sensitive skin. Lanolin is deeply hydrating, providing instant moisture, and it also emulsifies moisture on the skin, creating a protective barrier and restoring your skin’s natural moisture barrier. This results in lips that feel instantly soft, but also stay that way for up to eight hours which is great if you get fed up of reapplying your lip balm. I apply this in the morning and my lips feel hydrated at lunchtime and beyond.

Best for multi-tasking – Dr PawPaw Original Balm (£6.95, available from Dr PawPaw).

The main ingredient in Dr PawPaw Balm is fermented Pawpaw, the fruit of the plant Carica Papaya. The Pawpaw has been found to have many soothing properties for our skin and hair, making it a real ‘go to’ product, and the addition of Olive Oil and Aloe Vera Oil make this balm an intensively hydrating and soothing a multi-purpose product for you to carry around at all times, for use not only on the lips but skin, nails and hair. Since getting this little balm just days ago in my Lookfantastic box it’s already become my handbag hero!

Best for K-Beauty addicts – Pure Smile Lip Treatment Honey ($5, available from Memebox).

Enriched with honey extracts, snail mucus extracts, grape seed oil, shea butter, and many more naturally-derived nutrients, Pure Smile’s Lip Treatment moisturises, nourishes, and protects lips. The idea of putting snail mucus anywhere near your lips may sound a little gross, but trust me, this little beauty all the way from Korea (where snail mucus is just one of the odd ingredients creating a buzz) really works a treat on dry lips, especially when used overnight as an intensive lip treatment.

Best for aging lips – Dr Organic Rose Otto Lip Serum (£4.09, available from Holland & Barrett stores or online).

Rich in Rosehip Oil (Rosa Canina) which is known for its moisturising, softening and rejuvenating effects on the skin, this Lip Serum instantly hydrates and regenerates the lips. I smooth this not only on my lips but round the edges where those faint lines can begin to creep in, and so far so good! The texture of this serum is so soft and non-sticky, and it has a lovely delicate vanilla scent from the Vanilla Bean Oil. I’m seeing a lot of beauty treatments containing Rosehip Oil right now but this is the first lip balm I’ve come across that contains this magical ingredient and at just over £4 it’s a bargain.

So there you have it – my rundown of my favourite lipcare products – and with so many lovely balms on the market there should be no excuse for anything other than kissably soft lips this Valentine’s Day!
