Apparently Korean women spend way more on skincare than they do makeup; and their idea of taking care of the skin and treating imperfections, rather than simply covering it up with a tonne of foundation, makes complete sense if you think about it – what’s the point of gorgeous makeup if you don’t take care of what’s beneath?
With this in mind you will find that instead of a simple cleanse, tone and moisturise the Korean skincare routine consists of multiple steps – a combination of products that can seem quite frankly baffling and a little bit daunting. Memebox Special #50 Step By Step Skincare* from our favourite K-Beauty experts Memebox aims to simplify this by giving us an almost complete routine for us to discover and enjoy. Step By Step Skincare is a Memebox Superboxes, which contain all full size products, and dare I say it’s one of my favourite boxes to date! I love that we have an almost full routine and I was so excited to delve right in and get to grips with this exciting multi-step skincare routine.
Mizon Mojito Punch Pore Toner (RRP $22, available here)
Made with ingredients that you’d find in a real mojito – lime, sugar, mineral water, apple and peppermint leaf juice – this toner, which after cleansing forms the first step in our routine, sounds amazing and is amazing. Formulated particularly for those with an oily complexion the Mizon Toner helps unclog pores and delivers nutrients to tired, stressed skin, whilst refreshing tired complexions, and it does so gently, without being astringent or stripping the skin. With a zesty lime scent it’s so incredibly uplifting to apply too and really leaves my skin feeling ready to benefit fully from the rest of my skincare routine.
Taphre Special Care Sheet Mask (RRP $7, available here)
This sheet mask is a treatment step, used one or maybe twice a week to really give the skin an additional boost whenever it’s feeling particularly dehydrated or lacklustre. Made with propolis extracts, hyaluronic acid, collagen, as well as fruit and nut extracts, the easy to use sheet mask replenishes, repairs and protects, while soothing and hydrating the skin and giving it a more luminous appearance. Sheet masks are so easy to use, simply fit it over the face after cleansing and toning then relax, allowing the essence to be absorbed. Once done, simply remove the sheet, pat in any excess essence and enjoy your plump, rejuvenated skin!
Insobeau Super Yellow Intense Renew Essence (RRP $78, available here)
The next step in this multifaceted skincare routine is the application of an essence. Essences are applied after toner, or chemical exfoliators and sheet mask usage and are super-charged with ingredients that tackle a specific skin concern. The Insobeau Essence is designed with anti-aging in mind; its thin yellow lotion treats fine lines and wrinkles while brightening and evening out the complexion. Absorbing readily into skin with no residue or stickiness, it has a light citrus scent and is a dream to use, making my skin feel super-soft!
Migabee Royal Jelly & Honey Energy Ampoule (RRP $30, available here)
Next up we have an ampoule which, out of all Korean skincare, contains the most highly concentrated ingredients. Therefore don’t be deceived by its tiny size; ampoules really do pack a punch and you only need a very small amount to do the job. The Migabee Ampoule is enriched with royal jelly and royal honey extracts, and it’s used to soothe, moisturise and strengthen the skin. This has a clear, gel-like formula, much thicker than the essence I used in the previous step, however it still absorbs very quickly leaving my skin feeling hydrated and firmer.
She’s Uris Rice Water Double Action Cream (RRP $42, available here)
Now we’re on familiar ground with a face cream, although this is one with quite a unique texture, which although fairly common to K-beauty afficionados may be quite alien to beauty fans here in Europe. For this opaque gel-cream is a water-drop type cream, which means it turns into sort-of water droplets when it hits your skin. The ingredients in the She’s Uris Cream include rice bran, adenosine, cacao extracts and various herbs, and it does pretty much everything you’d expect and want from a face cream – brightening, hydrating and wrinkle refining. The cream absorbs quickly, although it does leaves a slight damp feeling on the skin rather than completely disappearing. I find this cream incredibly refreshing and I definitely feel it brightens my complexion.
TonyMoly My Sunny Milky Sun Cream (RRP $10, available here)
The use of a high SPF sun cream is a step that is particularly vital in Korean skincare as it helps prevent darkening of the complexion, and unevenness caused by UV damage and age spots, so to conclude our Step By Step Skincare box we have an SPF35 sun cream from TonyMoly. This mineral oil-free sunscreen has quite a white cast which works to give the appearence of a more even skin tone, but it could be tricky to work with on darker skins. The texture of the cream is rather thick but unlike so many sun creams doesn’t feel sticky or greasy and actually leaves my skin looking quite matte, which is a rare, very impressive quality. I’ll definitely be reaching for this when the sunnier weather comes around!
