Proactiv+ is a skincare brand founded in 1995 by Doctors Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, who met whilst training as Dermatologists at Stanford University. Their area of particular interest is acne and blemishes, and they have dedicated their professional lives to researching and fighting the causes of breakouts, in turn helping people overcome the stigma associated with these skin conditions.
Proactiv+ is an easy to use three-step system which treats blemishes and helps prevent new ones from forming. Simply by cleansing with the Skin Smoothing Exfoliator, targeting and treating skin using the Pore Targeting Treatment, and finally hydrating with the Complexion Perfecting Hydrator the system offers those with spot-prone skin a clearer, healthier complexion or your money back!
Everyone knows clearer skin begins with cleaner skin, so I was sent step one in the routine to review. With gentle exfoliating beads, glycolic acid and salicylic acid, the Skin Smoothing Exfoliator (177ml, £29.99)* deep cleanses whilst gently polishing away dead skin and pore clogging debris, leaving skin softer, brighter, cleaner and hydrated.
One of the key ingredients of this creamy cleanser are the hundreds of miniscule exfoliating beads which slough away the dead skin cells, dirt, oil, grime and makeup and other pore-clogging impurities that can build up and cause blemishes. Add to that Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid which also help improve cell turnover, renew the skin’s surface and refresh dull, conjested complexions, and you have the perfect spot-busting recipe. But it doesn’t stop there; the cleanser also boasts an impressive list of natural botanicals, including Saxifraga Sarmentosa Extract and Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract which have astringent and antibacterial properties, and anti-oxidant rich Vitis Vinifera and Morus Alba Bark extracts to heal stressed out, inflamed skin. To seal the deal Proactiv+ also ensure the formula is Paraben-free, oil-free and non-comedogenic.
The cleanser is suitable for daily use, both morning and night, and you apply as you would any wash-off cleanser; simply taking a large coin-size amount and gently massaging into dampened skin, in circular motions, for 1 to 2 minutes. You then rinse, dry and follow up with steps 2 and 3 or your usual skincare. My skin is fairly well behaved most of the time I would use this just as a weekly treatment to keep on top of blemishes, perhaps stepping it up if necessary in response to a hormonal breakout. Because the Glycolic Acid can make your skin more photosensitive it is recommended to use a sunscreen if you’re going out in the sun.
This cleanser is really effective and definitely leaves skin feeling smooth, soft and clear but if you don’t want to take my word for it (or the 20 million customers worldwide) Proactiv+ also offer a Clear Skin Promise that if you’re not absolutely delighted with any product, for any reason, simply return the bottles (even if they are empty) within 60 days of receipt for a complete refund.
