I am fascinated by the healing properties of flowers, herbs and spices and I’ve always loved experimenting with essential oils to make up my own massage and bath oils, as well as simply using them in my oil burner to fragrance my home with their beautiful scents.
Buff & Butter very kindly offered me the chance to try five of their essential oils from their huge range and to say I was spoilt for choice was an understatement! After much deliberation I finally selected Patchouli, Rose Geranium, Lavender, Ylang-ylang and Clary Sage*. Each of these oils has a lovely strong aroma which is a good indication of the quality and they are housed in dark glass bottles that prevent UV from causing the oils to degrade.
Each oil has a distinct use and quality that I will detail below.
Patchouli (10ml, £2.95) – Patchouli is a very strong smelling oil very often used in perfumery and is an important ingredient in incense. This oil boasts many positive effects of the mood, helping ease anxiety and depression and improve libido. Patchouli is also used as an insect repellant. This oil is often one people either love or hate and I absolutely adore it!
Patchouli Essential Oil blends well with essential oils of Bergamot, Clary Sage,Geranium, Lavender and Myrrh.
Rose Geranium (10ml, £5.20) Geranium Essential Oil is widely used for its many health benefits, including its ability to balance hormones, relieve stress and treat depression. It is also known to reduce inflammation and irritation, improve the health of the skin, alleviate the effects of menopause, improve circulation, benefit dental health, boost kidney health, and reduce blood pressure. Used with a base oil it makes a lovely bath soak or massage oil.
The Essential Oils which blend well with Geranium Oil include Angelica, Bergamot, Basil, Lavandin, Cedar Wood, Carrot Seed, Citronella, Lavender, Neroli, Lime, Orange, Lemon, Jasmine, Grapefruit and Rosemary Oil.
Lavender (10ml, £2.15) – Lavender is probably the best known essential oils and is one that I reach for time and time again. It has myriad benefits both internally and externally which have naturally contributed to its popularity, not just in recent times but going right back over 2000 years. Lavender is valuable oil for treating many skin conditions including acne, eczema and psoriasis. Lavender has a very calming and relaxing effect on the body so unsurprisingly it is found in many sleep aids, from pillow mists to balms.
Lavender blends with many other oils including Benzoin, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Geranium, Jasmine,Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Neroli, Patchouli, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Rosemary, Tea tree, and Ylang Ylang.
Ylang-Ylang (10ml, £2.85) – This oil has only become popular in more recent years, but now is commonplace in many skincare products. It serves as an antidepressant helping to lift the spirits as well as calm the nerves, and can also be used in the treatment of hypertension. Used topically in skincare it is antiseborrhoeic, helping to regulate oil production, and antiseptic, making it the essential oil of choice for oily and acne-prone skin.
Ylang-Ylang is ideal for blending with bergamot, grapefruits, lavender and sandalwood oils.
Clary Sage (10ml, £3.58) – Clary Sage Oil is another oil that can act as an antidepressant. With sedative properties it can also be used in the treatment of anxiety. Clary Sage is very balancing, is a well known antiseptic and kills bacteria. To this end it is often used in natural deodorants and to treat irritating scalp conditions. The oil is often recommended to those with problematic periods as it can help ease PMT, cramping, bloating and cravings.
This oil mixes very well with Lemon, Lime, Orange, Lavender, Pine, Juniper,Geranium, Sandal Wood, Jasmine and Frankincense oils.
As essential oils can be extremely potent and stimulating if you are pregnant or have any health concerns, please do ask your health practitioner before using the oils to ensure they are OK to use.
Buff & Butter stock a large range of pure essential oils in a range of sizes from 10ml to 100ml, as well as base oils and floral waters and it is the perfect home for fans of aromatherapy products. Even if you’re a novice however their website includes useful information on each individual oil. Their oils seem to be of very high quality and competatively priced so I’d be more than happy to recommend the Buff & Butter essential oil range.
