Exploding Kittens

Created by Elan Lee, Shane Small, and Matthew Inman, Exploding Kittens* started off life as a Kickstarter and rapidly gained a cult following, becoming the most backed Kickstarter ever.

The game play is fairly straightforward and consequently it is easy to pick up. The concept is to prevent the curious little kittens from detonating themselves and, in turn, you!

To begin a game of Exploding Kittens, you count up the number of players, subtract one, and insert that many Exploding Kitten cards into the deck. Everyone at the table draws a card from the pile in turn, until only one remains.

To win players need to make sure they are the last man standing. One way to do this is to avoid drawing cards, however if you are forced to draw one, and that card happens to be an Exploding Kitten, you can use a Defuse card if you hold one in your hand, which feature random things such as laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches to distract the cat from blowing you up. There are also Attack cards which force other players to take your turn and draw a card instead of you.

Other cards include Skip cards, which allow you to skip your turn, Favor cards that allow you to steal cards from another players’ hand, See-the-Future cards, which allow you to view the top three cards in the draw pile, and Nope cards, which enable you to stop something from happening in the game play.

Exploding Kittens is quick to play, easy to grasp and lots of fun. The cards are imaginatively illustrated and very funny in an off-beat way and it’s a great game to get out at parties or random gatherings with friends.

You can also extend the fun with Add-on packs and an Exploding Kittens app. The original game retails at £19.99 from all the usual games retailers.
